Description
Across the street from the site of the Jamestown colonists' first landing (First Landing State Park) is the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse. The first lighthouse ever authorized by Congress, the lighthouse still has connections with the government; located on the grounds of the Fort Story military base, you'll have to show ID at a military checkpoint to enter. The brick lighthouse was constructed in the 1790s and was an important step for trade along the Virginia and Maryland coasts, as it made the Chesapeake Bay more easily and safely navigable.Originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, First Landing State Park is located by the Chesapeake Bay. The park, which is Virginias most visited state park, is nestled in Virginia Beach. First Landing offers boating, swimming, nature and history programs, hiking, biking, picnicking, a boat launch, cabins and 20 miles of trails on 2,888 acres. It also has campsites with water and electric hook-ups and nearby access to restrooms and showers.
The park's name was changed in 1997 from Seashore State Park to First Landing State Park to reflect its heritage as the first place where members of the Virginia Company landed. They went on to settle Jamestown.
First Landing is near the Little Creek-Fort Story Joint Expeditionary Base. The base is a military training facility that operates year-round, in all weather conditions and during various times of day.
