Description
The festival honours the Hindu god, Lord Ganesha, who is considered the reliever of all obstacles.During the festival, along with the idol of Lord Ganesha, a mouse which sits on Ganpati’s feet, is also worshipped by devotees. The mouse is called Mooshak and is considered to be Lord Ganesha’s vaahan or vehicle.
The myth of Lord Ganesha’s vaahan(vehicle) is one for the ages.
It is believed that a demon by the name of Mooshikasura was wreaking havoc in the world and the gods had sent Lord Ganesha to fight him. Even before Lord Ganesha attacked the demon, he went down on his knees and prayed to the Lord for forgiveness.
Lord Ganesha decided to forgive him under one condition that he has to serve him forever. The demon accepted the condition and Lord Ganesha turned him into a mouse.
This is how Mooshikasura the demon became Mooshak the vahaan.
